Idea Haver: OK, so here’s my idea. This new song we have on our hands, it’s great, but I want to make sure it gets big. You know, VIRAL. Like the Gangnam Styles. So here’s what we’re going to do:

PUT. HASHTAGS. EVERYWHERE.

And I mean everywhere. Tweets, commercials, T-shirts, music videos, song titles, album names, anything we can. If we do it, and completely overwhelm the public with this plan, we can’t fail. Like the Gangnam Styles. OK, LET’S DO IT.

This is a great story by reporter Karina Bland about Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA), a really fascinating and inspirational nonprofit organization that works to make the world feel like a safer place for kids.

Bikers Against Child Abuse make abuse victims feel safe

Even kids know that nobody messes with bikers. Bikers look big, and strong, and mean, both in real life and in how they are portrayed on television and in films. They are easy riders, sons of anarchy, not afraid of anything. And they take care of their own.

A child who has been abused by someone bigger and stronger knows too well what it feels like to be small and vulnerable. BACA shifts that balance by putting even bigger and stronger people - and more of them - on the child’s side.

And if those even-bigger and stronger people are scary-looking too, perhaps with flaming-skull tattoos, chains on their belts and scars of questionable origin, so much the better.

Inspired by Joey Ramone’s posthumous love letter to New York City, directed by Greg Jardin, high school student Kevin Chiu spent two months taking 1991 photos of 140 Hunter College HS peers and teachers to create his own stop-motion homage.

Time in Place is an interesting time-based interactive visualization of human and vehicular activity at an intersection in Seattle. The creators used a custom program that extracted and graphed information from existing traffic cam technology. The blurb below explains what’s shown in the picture, but it’s better to visit the site and play with it yourself.

Time in Place

This is TIME IN PLACE; an activity snapshot of a specific place at a specific point in time. What you see here is a radial graph that displays what the activity has been in the past 24 hours. AM is red, PM is blue. Graphed data outside of the median ring shows more activity than the previous 24hr. Graphed data within the median is less. What we set out to make was a simple graphical clock. What we ended up with is a deeply informative graph disguised as a minimalist design. Move the clock hand back in time or type in a date to see what was happening in Seattle at the intersection of Pike and Broadway.
