Then and now: The 2011 Japan tsunami
Last year’s tsunami in Japan caused what is estimated to have been the most expensive natural disaster ever, with more than 15,000 lives lost. See before-and-after photos.

Battered bridge: This combination (above) of pictures shows residents of Ishinomaki crossing a bridge covered with tsunami debris four days after the disaster. The second picture shows the same scene on Jan. 13, 2012.

My friend Jason Rafanan just opened a silk screen and design shop on Alki Beach in West Seattle called ThisThat. The first project is a benefit for the relief efforts in Japan.
ThisThat | Japan x American Red Cross Benefit T-Shirt

As new owners of a silk screen and design shop, it was only necessary that we design and print a T-shirt for people to wear. Something tactile, something people could be proud of wearing, while showing passers-by that something can be done. We’re surprised at the overwhelming response we’ve been getting for the design and the first-run, so we’ll be making more. A lot more.
Orders will begin shipping on MONDAY, MARCH 21. Proceeds will go to the American Red Cross to help benefit the earthquake/tsunami victims in Japan. Our goal is to send a $20,000 check. We know that with your help and word of mouth, we can far exceed that goal.

There’s an interactive slideshow accompanying this article that allows you to compare before and after images at sites around Japan. The devastation in some scenes is pretty unbelievable.
Satellite photos show devastation in Japan

NASA satellites have snapped new pictures of the devastating floods and fires in Japan from the deadly earthquake and tsunami that struck the country on Friday.
Photos from NASA’s Earth-watching Terra and Aqua satellites paint a stark picture from above of the damage by the massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake and the subsequent tsunami it spawned.

This is one of the saddest images I have ever seen. Everything in the picture looks broken. I’m not a big fan of people taking pictures of other people in situations of grief. It seems somewhat predatory and a little callous to be in someone’s face with a camera when their world is collapsing. There are times, however, when photos of this sort have real value. This photographer did a commendable job on two fronts; first, in providing a relatively intimate look into the human side of a terrible tragedy while allowing the grief-stricken woman the distance that the telephoto lens allows, and second in using the opportunity to compose a shot that really gives a glimpse at the scale of the devastation.
Here are some ways you can help.
